In the 20+ years I’ve been paying close attention to fine shotguns, I’ve seen three things happen to prices: Up until about 2010, they went up, up, and up. Then they hit a plateau that lasted a few seasons. Finally, they went down.
Right now, prices for most doubles are still falling. Unless a side-by-side checks all the boxes–famous maker, super rare, small gauge, very original (like this 20g Parker A1 Special that sold for $253,000) — demand is sluggish. That means you can find some great deals.
This Francotte is one of them. I think it’s 20E or 25E. Regardless of the grade, it’s a bargain–and a great grouse gun.

In their day, Francottes cost for more than most American shotguns. Why? Because they were better. This one is built on an Anson & Deeley boxlock action, one of the finest SxS designs ever built. It also features sideplates and reliable ejectors (unlike Parkers).
Overall, it’s a ton of classy shotgun priced in the same ballpark as a new, soul less Benelli.
