I’ve had a passion for double-barrels my whole life. Ruger’s Red Labels were the shotguns that lit that flame for me, and even though I’ve a lot of negative things about these Over-and-Unders, I’ve always liked them. I’ve toyed with the idea of buying one in 28-gauge, but never followed through with the whim.
Introduced in 1977, the Red Label was America’s first mass-made O/U. As a kid, I remember seeing them at the local gunshop. They were usually the finest shotgun there, and they were always behind the counter. I could only admire them with my eyes, but I could see enough to know that I wanted one.
I’m not sure when Ruger introduced their stainless-steel line of “All Weather” Red Labels (the actions on Red Labels were always stainless steel). With black synthetic stocks, the All Weather are as close to a Black Gun as I’ve ever seen in a double. That being said, they do look perfect for sea ducks, or for hunting from a blind in crappy, waterfowling weather.
