Krieghoff is one of the world’s top gunmakers, and if you’re into target competition O/Us, you’re already familiar with their guns. This German company started as Sempert & Krieghoff in 1886, and in the late ’50s they started messing with the target shotguns that would build them into the name we know today.
Before that, the company was well known for European-style game guns: rifles, shotguns, combination guns, Drillings, Vierlings. The Neptun-grade drilling you see here may have been one of finest guns at one time. As you can see, is still a fantastic looking firearm today. Pre-war Krieghoff Neptun “Kurz” Sidelock Drilling: 16 x 16 over 8 x 57 JR. This elegant powerhouse is a “Top-Of-The-Line” fully-featured unaltered example of the “Master Hunter’s” choice of weapon for close quarters driven Boar. Fast, light, powerful and deadly accurate. Fully engraved in beautiful Suhl scroll and traditional game scenes with extra fine detail only found on the top of the line guns from this period.
Gun has factory un-cut 21 7/8” barrels and weighs in at a featherweight 6 lbs 12 oz, (7 pounds 12 oz. with scope!) Both bores measure .673 with identical constrictions of .038 and show only the slightest sign of frosting. Rifle bore is excellent as well. Stock measures 13 5/8” over factory butt plate. Rifle has side-lever cocking and automatic flip up rear sight. Also has the only hand-detachable trigger group we’ve seen on a Krieghoff drilling. Has spring-loaded trapdoor butt stock cartridge magazine. Scope is a factory mounted Zeiss “Zielever” 4x with “post” reticle and an early attempt at bullet drop compensator and engraved quick detach mounts.
Recently serviced by “Scope Doctor” and is fully functional and crystal clear. Entire gun was gone over by a veteran Krieghoff factory smith and functions flawlessly. Case is contemporary Oak and Leather with custom fitted interior by none other than Mike Messina of NY. This drilling is top-notch all the way. Very rare to find this much firepower packed into such a high-grade, compact and lightweight package. Gun is totally original and has slight pitting on standing breech and dings in the wood alongside the trigger guard (see pictures), but overall is very good.
Keep in mind that this was likely a GI bring back and is nothing short of a miracle that it has it’s original scope still in excellent working condition.
