I’ve always loved the looks of high-grade LC Smith shotguns. This A-2 is a great example of why they’re so special. From the sculpted details on the fences and the dipped-edge lockplates to the shaping of the top of the action, it’s a unique — and beautiful – shotgun. I also think it’s a piece of collectible Americana on the same level as Elmer Crowell decoys and paintings by Aiden Lassell Ripley. But there is one big difference. You can actually take this shotgun out and use it.
From the LC Smith Collectors website:
“The A-2 (often referred to as the A-2 Automatic Ejector in catalogs) was the highest grade of L.C. Smith available from 1891 until 1912 … It was made to order, and the price at first was ” furnished upon application.” In 1898 it sold for $390, and it was priced at $325 in 1912. Only 213 were made (6 in 10 gauge, 192 in 12 gauge, 9 in 16 gauge, and 6 in 20 gauge). Only one was made without automatic ejectors.”
