W.R. Pape 16ga Sidelock SxS 29” Damascus bbls STUNNING ENGRAVING: For sale is a very rare and high grade WR Pape sidelock. Known as “The Purdey of the North”, Pape built high quality and unique guns in small numbers at his factory in Northern England. You will likely never see another gun quite like this one. Chambered in 16-bore with highly desirable 29” Damascus barrels that are nitro proofed at 2 3/4″. This small-bore back-action sidelock is adorned with gorgeous, full coverage hand-cut scroll work with incredible detail. The stunning engraving, combined with a highly profiled action, and exhibition grade wood, makes for a unique and stunning piece. A real head turner! The highly figured walnut has been fashioned into a slim splinter forend paired with an English grip. The engraved toe and heel clips are very nice touch. Pape was known for unique checkering patterns and this gun is no exception. The action and stock are balanced by rare and highly desirable 29″ damascus barrels that are beautifully struck. The fairly wide game rib ends with a doll’s head extension. Fixed chokes are approx IC/MOD, making it a versatile bird gun. The gun is nitro proofed for 2 3/4” shotshells which is also rare to see and only adds to it versatility. Other details include gold lined cocking indicators, fine hand cut checkering, drop points on stock, and a blank initial shield. Overall, it is in beautiful condition. Before being imported, this Pape was loving maintained in the UK. The action has that perfect patina we all love to see on a vintage double. The wood is excellent. The oil finish is strong and the checkering sharp. The barrels were likely rebrowned at some point and would be considered excellent were it not for the bottom of the muzzles where some of the finish has been lost from being in a wet gun slip on a plantation quail hunt in Georgia. The gun is in very good mechanical condition as well and the lock up is solid. The details on this double are absolutely awesome and would cost an exorbitant amount to replicate. It is the highest grade shotgun I’ve ever seen by Pape. Judging by the serial number, it was likely made in the late 1880’s, in the hey-day of Pape, when all of their guns were made entirely in-house, under one roof. This gun is ready to provide many years of service and look great while doing it!
