The last time there was a TRUE and CORRECT Grade 45 (in any gauge) on the market was 12 years ago (when I found this one at a Vintagers event). For reference, the “J.P. Sauer Prussian Grade 45 SxS 20 Gauge” currently advertised under this GI Catetory “Sauer Shotguns – Prussian” is really a Grade 40.
Here’s an excerpt from the Double Gun Journal, Volume 15, Issue 2, Summer 2004, Page 139: “Sauer Grade 45 guns are very uncommon with only a few known examples among collectors. The Grade 45 is listed and described in the SD&G (1907) catalogues as being ornamented with game scene engraving with gold inlays. Any potential buyer of a Grade 45 would have to ante up some $400 to pay for one of the finest Sauer shotguns ever produced and a staggering sum, for the times, of $600 for the Grade 60. Four to six hundred dollars was not small change by any means in 1907 and this explains why so few of these higher-graded Sauer boxlocks were produced”. Price: $13,500*
