
The little Beretta O/U was in the rack behind the knife counter, at attention with a few 20gs just like it, some 12gs, and rifles with shining, stainless-steel bolts. It was a 686 Onyx with a straight stock. After my first dozen visits, the guys in the shop set it on the counter as soon as I walked in.
It wasn’t expensive, but it was too expensive for me. I had my first real job then, but also my first real debt (F150, college, credit cards). It took me fifteen years to be in a better place and make one mine.
